In this novel, Jamal Malik who is a former street child from the Juhu slum.He was orphan since his mother died in Hindu-Muslim riots.He has one brother called Salim.After their mother dead, they became street child.One day they meet the child named called Latika who is another child from their slum.One day a group of people came to their slum and take them their place.Actually these people are the gang who are letting children to do begging on the street of Mumbai.They make the children blind in order to make them more profitable as singing beggars.Jamal, Salim and Latika found out and they tried to escape from the gang.But in the end, only Jamal and Salim escaped.Over next few years they make living selling goods, picking pockets, stealing.After few years back they came back to Mumbai to find Latika.Finally they found her and saved her from the gang.After that his brother Salim forced him to leave Salim and Latika alone.So, he left and working at a teashop.In the mean while he tried to get contact with his brother and Latika.Years later, he found Salim, who is now gangster.Then he found Latika and he tried to get her back.Unfortunately he couldn't get. During that time he tried to answer the questions in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.After he answered almost all the questions, the police thinks he cheated.

Actually, Jamal answered all the questions by his life experience and he knows all the answer by thinking with problems that he has faced.And Jamal loves Latika since he was young.He always thinks to find Latika since they were apart.But first time he found her, he was forced to leave his brother and Latika alone.And second time he found her, she is belong to his brother gang leader.So, he is trying to save her from that guy and answer the questions in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

But the police thinks a guy from slum area can't answer those kind of questions which are questioned in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. So, he catches Jamal one day before answering the last question and ask Jamal how did he get all the answers.And he doesn't believe even Jamal tells the truth.Not only the police but also Jamal's brother and Latika don't believe how he gets the answer.But finally Jamal's brother lets Latika go and Latika answers the last question.
